Product Highlights
Description
The System Sensor D4120 is a photoelectric duct smoke detector, installed in air handling ductwork to detect smoke carried in the airstream.
Duct smoke detectors exist because an air handling system will distribute smoke throughout a building if it continues to run during a fire. Their function is to sense smoke in the duct and shut the air handler down, and where required to signal the fire alarm system.
Photoelectric sensing detects smoke by the light it scatters within a sensing chamber. This technology responds well to the smouldering fires that produce large visible smoke particles, which is the fire type most relevant in building spaces served by ductwork.
Sampling tubes are integral to how the detector works. An inlet tube spans the duct to collect a representative sample across its full width, and an exhaust tube returns the air, the pressure difference between them driving flow through the sensing chamber. A detector fitted without correctly sized and oriented sampling tubes will not sample the airstream properly and may not detect smoke at all.
Installation is governed by fire code and by the equipment listing, and testing and documentation requirements apply.
Applications include commercial HVAC systems, air handlers, rooftop units, and any air distribution system where code requires smoke detection.
