Product Highlights
Description
The Refrigeration Technologies RT400P is a heat transfer compound used to improve thermal contact between surfaces.
Thermal compounds fill the microscopic air gaps between two surfaces that are supposed to be in thermal contact. Air is a poor conductor, and two nominally flat metal surfaces pressed together actually touch across a small fraction of their apparent area, with air occupying the rest.
Filling those gaps with a conductive compound substantially improves heat transfer across the interface.
The application that matters most in this trade is sensor mounting. A thermostat bulb, thermistor, or surface temperature sensor clamped to a pipe reads the pipe temperature only to the extent that it is thermally coupled to it. Poor contact means the sensor reads somewhere between pipe temperature and ambient, and every measurement or control decision based on it is wrong.
A TXV sensing bulb is the clearest example. The bulb controls refrigerant flow based on suction line temperature, and a bulb with poor contact senses partly the ambient air, causing the valve to meter incorrectly. Superheat then runs high or low without any obvious cause.
Compound plus firm clamping plus insulation over the bulb is the complete installation.
Confirm the compound suits the temperature range and materials, apply a thin even film rather than a thick layer, and clamp firmly.
