Rayovac ROVAL9V-12 Ray-o-VAC Battery Alkaline 9 volt

The Rayovac ROVAL9V-12 is a 9 volt alkaline battery, 12 per pack and 12 packs per case.

The 9 volt battery survives in a world of AA cells for a specific reason: voltage. Most electronics run on cells in series, but some devices need the voltage in one package — smoke detectors, test meters, and a long tail of instruments designed decades ago around exactly this format.

Smoke detectors are the application that matters and they are worth a word. A 9 volt in a smoke detector is not a convenience item; it is the thing that makes the detector work. The chirp that means a flat battery is one of the most reliably ignored sounds in any building, and the detectors found dead after fires are almost always dead for that reason. A case of 9 volts on a facility's shelf means the chirp gets answered rather than the detector being unhooked.

Alkaline is the chemistry: good shelf life, good capacity, and it leaks when fully discharged and left in place. That is the failure mode worth knowing — a flat alkaline left in a meter for a year destroys the contacts.

The 12 per pack, 12 packs per case quantity is facility supply.

Applications include smoke detectors, test equipment, and instruments.
