The McDaniel Metals MPAN03236 is a 32 by 36 inch metal drain pan, installed beneath an air handler, furnace, or coil to capture condensate and leakage.

Secondary drain pans exist because the primary condensate path fails predictably. Drain lines block with the biological growth that thrives in a wet, dark pan, traps dry out or are omitted entirely, primary pans crack with age, and coil connections develop leaks. Any of these releases water into the equipment location, and where the equipment sits in an attic, above a finished ceiling, or in an upper floor closet, the resulting damage regularly exceeds the value of the equipment several times over.

The pan is sized to the equipment footprint with clearance on all sides, since a pan that only partially underlies the unit captures only part of the leakage.

Standard practice is to pipe the secondary pan to a conspicuous discharge location, typically above a window or through a soffit, so that a discharge is immediately visible to the occupant and prompts a service call. Piping it to a concealed drain defeats the warning function, and the leak then continues undetected until the pan itself fails. Many jurisdictions additionally require a float switch in the secondary pan to shut the equipment down on water detection.
