DiversiTech Water Heater Pan 26" 6-M26

The DiversiTech 6-M26 is a 26 inch diameter water heater drain pan, installed beneath a storage water heater to capture leakage and tank failure.

Water heater pans exist because tank failure is not a matter of if but when. A storage water heater has a finite service life, and when the glass lining fails and the tank perforates, it releases its full contents and then continues to discharge at supply pressure until the water is shut off. A pan piped to a drain converts that event from a flood into a nuisance.

Even short of catastrophic failure, pans capture the slow leakage that develops at fittings, at the temperature and pressure relief valve, and at the tank seams, giving visible early warning of a problem that would otherwise go unnoticed until damage appeared in the ceiling below.

Pans are required by code where a water heater is installed in a location where leakage would cause damage, which in practice covers attics, upper floors, finished basements, and interior closets. The pan must be piped to an approved discharge point; an unpiped pan simply delays the flood by the volume it holds, which on a failed tank is a matter of seconds.
