The McDaniel Metals MDPW1644 is a 16 by 44 inch welded drain pan fabricated from 20 gauge steel, installed beneath an air handler or coil to capture condensate and leakage.

An air handler produces condensate throughout the cooling season, and any failure in the primary drain path, a blocked drain line, a cracked primary pan, a failed trap, or a leaking coil connection, releases that water into the equipment location. Where the equipment sits in an attic, above a finished ceiling, or in an upper floor closet, the resulting damage regularly exceeds the cost of the equipment itself.

A secondary drain pan captures that water and directs it to a discharge point. Standard practice is to pipe the secondary pan to a conspicuous location where a discharge is immediately visible, typically above a window or a soffit, so that the occupant sees water and calls for service. A secondary pan piped to a concealed drain removes the warning function entirely, and the eventual failure of the pan itself then produces the damage the pan was installed to prevent. Many jurisdictions additionally require a float switch in the pan to shut the equipment down.

Welded 20 gauge steel construction gives a rigid pan with sealed corners, which is more durable and less prone to seam leakage than a folded and sealed pan.
