Fasco Flexible Motor Mount Bracket FM55

The Fasco FM55 is a flexible motor mount bracket providing resilient support for electric motors in blower and fan assemblies.

Resilient mounting isolates motor vibration from the equipment structure, and the difference it makes is easily demonstrated by removing it.

An electric motor produces vibration from small residual imbalance in the rotor, from magnetic forces in the stator at line frequency, and from whatever the fan or blower wheel contributes. Mounted rigidly, that energy passes into the equipment cabinet, into the ductwork, and into the building structure, where it is heard as a hum.

Ductwork is particularly effective at radiating it, since duct is essentially a large panel connected throughout the building.

Resilient mounts interrupt the path. The rubber elements absorb the vibration rather than transmitting it, and the audible difference in occupied space can be substantial.

The mounts degrade with age and heat. Rubber hardens, and hardened mounts transmit vibration nearly as well as a rigid connection. Equipment that has become noisier over the years often has mounts that have gone hard, and replacing them restores the original sound level.

Mounts should be inspected whenever a motor is changed, and replaced as a matter of course if hardened or cracked.

Confirm the bracket suits the motor frame diameter and the mounting arrangement. Ensure fasteners are tightened so the resilient element can function rather than being clamped solid.
