Product Highlights
Description
The CRC18414 is CRC BRIGHT ZINC-IT Cold Galvanized Inhibitor, a corrosion inhibitor coating supplied in a 16 oz aerosol.
The Bright designation is what distinguishes this from a standard cold galvanizing compound, and the difference is appearance rather than chemistry alone. A conventional zinc-rich repair coating dries to a flat grey that stands out plainly against the bright spangled finish of new hot-dip galvanized steel. On structural work behind a wall, nobody cares. On handrail, guardrail, architectural steelwork, or anything a customer will look at, a repair that advertises itself is a defect. A bright formulation blends into the surrounding galvanized surface.
The protection mechanism is the same as any zinc-rich coating and is the reason to use one. Zinc corrodes preferentially to steel, so a zinc-rich film continues protecting the substrate galvanically even where it is later scratched through. This is a fundamentally different behaviour from a paint film, which only protects what it physically covers and fails from the moment it is broken.
The application it exists for is field repair: hot-dip galvanizing is destroyed wherever steel is cut, welded, drilled, or ground, and re-dipping a finished fabrication is rarely practical.
Applications include weld and cut repair on galvanized steel, handrail and guardrail, architectural and structural steelwork, fencing, and general touch-up where finish appearance matters.
Surface preparation governs adhesion and performance. Consult the manufacturer's SDS and technical data before use.
