Cold galvanizing solves a problem created by hot work. Hot-dip galvanizing protects steel by covering it in zinc, which corrodes sacrificially in place of the steel beneath. The moment that coating is cut, welded, drilled, or ground, the protection is destroyed exactly at the joint — the location most exposed and least accessible for repair. Sending a fabrication back to the galvanizer is rarely practical. A cold galvanizing compound restores the zinc film in the field.

The protection is genuinely galvanic rather than a barrier. The coating carries zinc in a form that remains electrically connected to the steel, so it continues to corrode preferentially and protect the substrate even where the film is later scratched. A zinc-coloured paint does not do this; a zinc-rich coating does.

Weldability is the specification that matters on a fabrication line. A coating that has to be ground off before welding adds a step and gets skipped. One that can be welded through does not.

Applications include weld and cut repair on galvanized steel, structural steel, fabricated assemblies, fencing, guardrail, ductwork, conduit, and general touch-up on galvanized surfaces.
