Coppertop DURMN1604B2Z Alkaline Battery 9 V 9V

The Duracell DURMN1604B2Z is a Coppertop alkaline battery in 9V size, model MN1604, rated 9 V. Supplied 2 per pack, 48 packs per case.

The 9V is the smoke alarm battery, and that single application shapes almost everything about how the size sells. It is why 9V demand spikes at daylight saving changeovers — the long-standing public safety message to change smoke alarm batteries when the clocks change — and why a retailer who is out of stock that week has misread the calendar rather than the market.

That application also carries a real responsibility. A smoke alarm with a dead battery is not a smoke alarm. This is one of the few consumer products where the failure mode is measured in lives rather than inconvenience, and it is worth stocking accordingly.

The 9V construction is unlike the other sizes on the shelf. Rather than a single cell, it contains six small cells in series inside the rectangular housing — which is how 9 V is reached when alkaline chemistry produces 1.5 V per cell.

Beyond smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, 9V powers test equipment, multimeters, wireless microphones, guitar pedals, and a range of instrumentation.

The 2-pack is the format for a household changing one or two alarms.

Applications include smoke and CO alarms, test and measurement equipment, audio equipment, and instrumentation.
