Zebra Instruments VZ Pro ECM Motor Protector 5

The Zebra Instruments VZPRO is a voltage protection device for electronically commutated motors, fitted to guard the motor's control electronics against supply conditions that would otherwise damage them.

ECM motors are more sensitive to supply quality than the PSC motors they replace. The control module contains power electronics that rectify the incoming supply, and those components are vulnerable to surges, sustained overvoltage, and the transients associated with utility switching and lightning activity. An induction motor tolerates such events comparatively well; an ECM module may not.

This matters commercially because an ECM blower motor is a substantially more expensive component than a PSC motor, and a protection device costs a small fraction of the motor it defends. On properties with a history of supply disturbances, in areas served by overhead distribution, or in regions with frequent electrical storms, fitting protection when an ECM motor is installed is straightforward economics.

Protection is most worth specifying at the time of motor replacement, when the wiring is already accessible and the labour is already committed.
