Zebra Instruments For X-13 & ECM Style Motors

The Zebra Instruments X13PR is a protection device for X13 and comparable ECM style blower motors, installed to shield the motor's control electronics from damaging supply conditions.

The case for protecting an ECM motor rests on the cost asymmetry. Replacing an ECM blower motor involves an expensive component plus the labour to remove the blower assembly, and on equipment where the motor has already failed once from an electrical event, the probability of it happening again is not low. The property's supply characteristics do not change.

Protection is therefore most clearly justified where a motor has already been lost to a surge, where the property experiences frequent outages or voltage disturbances, or where the equipment is remote or difficult to access and a return visit is costly.

Fitting the device at the time of motor replacement adds little labour, since the connections are already open.

Confirm compatibility with the motor series and the supply voltage before ordering, and install according to the manufacturer's instructions. Isolate the equipment before making any connections, and allow time for the motor's internal capacitors to discharge before handling the motor's control connector.
