The Yellow Jacket 60210 is a 45 degree flaring tool for forming flares on soft copper tubing.

The 45 degree flare is the standard in refrigeration and air conditioning, and it is not the only flare angle in use, which occasionally causes confusion.

Automotive and hydraulic work uses 37 degree flares in some applications, and the two are not interchangeable. A 45 degree flare seated against a 37 degree fitting contacts on a line rather than across the face, and it will not seal.

Within refrigeration work the 45 degree standard is consistent, so the practical concern is matching the tool to the tubing rather than to the fitting.

Tube condition governs the result. Soft annealed copper flares cleanly. Hard drawn copper will crack when flared unless it is annealed first, and work hardened tube, which includes tube that has been bent and straightened or previously flared at the same point, is prone to splitting.

Cutting back to fresh tube rather than reflaring a damaged end is the correct response to a failed flare.

The flare nut must go on the tube before the flare is formed, and this is worth checking twice because the alternative is cutting the flare off and starting again.

Confirm the tool covers the sizes needed, deburr before flaring, and inspect every finished flare before assembly.
