The Uniweld USRS220 Smartech is a digital refrigerant scale for charging and recovery.

Digital scales bring a capability beyond simple weight display: many provide programmable target charges, automatic shutoff through a solenoid valve when the target is reached, and cumulative tracking of refrigerant added or removed.

The automatic shutoff function is the one with practical value. Charging a system requires attention divided between the scale, the gauges, and the equipment, and a scale that closes the charging valve at the target weight removes the possibility of overshooting while attention is elsewhere.

Overcharging is not a trivial error. Excess refrigerant backs up in the condenser, raising head pressure, increasing compressor current and discharge temperature, and on systems with a fixed orifice it degrades performance markedly. Correcting an overcharge means recovering refrigerant, which takes longer than charging correctly in the first place.

Scales require periodic verification against a known weight. A scale that has been dropped, stored in a hot vehicle, or simply used for years may read inaccurately, and an inaccurate scale is worse than none because it inspires confidence.
