Sterno STR10364 Chafing Fuel Handy Wick Food Service; 24 Each Carton Can

The Sterno STR10364 is a handy wick chafing fuel, methanol, wick form, 4.84 oz can, 4-hour burn, food service grade, 24 per carton.

The burn time is the specification and it is the one that gets planned around rather than the fuel.

Four hours is a service window. It covers a lunch service, a reception, or a buffet with setup and clearing at each end. The point of matching burn time to the event is that a can which runs out mid-service means cold food in front of guests, and a can that is still burning two hours after everyone has left is wasted fuel and an unattended flame.

So the calculation is honest: light time to end time, plus the setup before and the margin after. A four-hour can covers about a three-hour service comfortably. The six-hour can in this range covers a long event or a full day.

Under-buying is the expensive mistake, because the fix is opening a fresh can mid-service — and adding fuel to a hot unit or moving a lit can are exactly the two things that cause burns.

The methanol point belongs on every one of these: the flame is nearly invisible in daylight. A burning can looks like a cold one, and people reach into it.

Extinguish with the lid. Never refill a hot unit.
