Robertshaw Tubing Aluminum 1/4" 5 11-293

The Robertshaw 11-293 is a five foot length of 1/4 inch aluminium tubing supplied for gas control and pilot line connections.

Pilot and control line work sits alongside the main gas piping on an appliance, and the same discipline applies to both even though the flow involved is small.

Every joint made must be leak tested. A soap solution applied to the connection reveals a leak as bubbles, and an approved electronic detector serves the same purpose. A flame must never be used to test for gas leaks, a practice that still occasionally appears and has caused serious injury.

Thread sealant belongs on tapered pipe threads, not on flare or compression sealing surfaces. A flare seals metal to metal on the cone, and sealant on that surface interferes with the seal rather than improving it. On compression fittings, sealant on the ferrule prevents it seating correctly.

Overtightening is the other common error. A flare nut drawn up excessively can crack the flare or distort the seat, and the resulting leak is often met with further tightening, which makes it worse. Tightening to a firm, consistent tension and then leak testing is the correct sequence.

Routing should keep the tube clear of hot surfaces and moving parts, and supported so vibration does not fatigue it.

Confirm tube diameter, length, and fitting compatibility. Leak test all connections and confirm correct pilot operation after any work.
