A sanding sealer looks like a redundant step and it is not. Deft describes this as a 100 percent nitrocellulose interior sealer intended as the first coat on a lacquer finishing project, drying in 30 minutes and ready to sand in an hour.

Why it exists is the sanding. A sanding sealer contains a soft, high-solids material that sands to a fine powder rather than gumming up and clogging the paper. Bare lacquer does not — it is soft and thermoplastic, and sanding it loads the abrasive within a few strokes. So the sealer is the coat that gets levelled, and the finish coats go over a surface that is already flat. Sanding the finish instead is how people end up cutting through to bare wood.

Deft notes a second function: one thin coat blocks most stains from weeping up through the final finish. It also states the sealer is non-yellowing and will not skin over in the can.

Coverage is stated at 400 to 500 sq ft per gallon depending on porosity.
