The Packard 10009 is a 9 watt, 1550 RPM, 115 volt motor for small fan applications in refrigeration and light ventilation equipment.

Rating small fan motors in watts rather than horsepower is the convention in refrigeration, where outputs are far below the fractional horsepower figures used in HVAC. Nine watts is a very light duty, suited to circulation fans and small evaporator fans in refrigerated cabinets and display cases.

Motors at this size are usually shaded pole designs, which are simple and inexpensive but comparatively inefficient. In a refrigerated application that inefficiency has a compound cost: the power the motor consumes is largely converted to heat inside the cabinet, and that heat must then be removed by the refrigeration system, which consumes further power.

This is the reasoning behind the shift to electronically commutated fan motors in commercial refrigeration, where the saving is counted twice.
