The Packard L5421 is a 9 watt, 208-230 volt clockwise rotation unit bearing motor for evaporator and condenser fan applications in commercial refrigeration equipment.

The 208-230 volt rating distinguishes this motor from the 115 volt equivalent of the same output. Both voltages are used in commercial refrigeration depending on the equipment manufacturer and the supply available, and the two motors are otherwise similar enough that substitution errors are easy to make.

The consequences differ by direction. A 115 volt motor connected to a 230 volt supply fails almost immediately. A 230 volt motor connected to 115 volts will not start properly, draws heavy current, and overheats.

Reading the nameplate of the motor being replaced, and confirming the supply voltage at the equipment, takes moments and prevents both outcomes. Where a fan motor has failed shortly after a previous replacement, this is the first thing to verify.

Confirm wattage, voltage, rotation, shaft diameter and length, mounting stud arrangement, and permitted mounting orientation before ordering, and inspect the blade and guard during installation.
