Owens Corning Ductboard 1" Owens 441681

The Owens Corning 441681 is a 1 inch thick fiberglass duct board panel measuring 48 by 120 inches, used to fabricate rectangular duct and plenums.

Duct board is a rigid fiberglass panel faced with reinforced foil on the exterior, from which duct is cut and folded on site. The material serves as the duct wall, the thermal insulation, and the acoustic lining in one component, which is why it remains widely used in residential and light commercial construction. A sheet metal duct achieving the same thermal performance requires separate external insulation, and the same acoustic performance requires internal lining.

Fabrication is done with a set of grooving tools that cut the shiplap and vee grooves allowing the board to fold into a rectangular section, with the closure made by stapling and sealing the foil facing.

The 1 inch thickness gives a lower R-value than the thicker boards and is used where thermal performance requirements are modest, where the duct runs within conditioned space, or where available depth constrains the assembly. Where duct passes through an unconditioned attic or crawl space, the applicable energy code will usually require more.

Workmanship determines outcome. Poorly closed joints leak and the exposed fiberglass edge is vulnerable to erosion in the airstream, so proper sealing of every seam and closure is essential.
