Owens Corning Ductboard 1-1/2" Owens 441723

The Owens Corning 441723 is a 1-1/2 inch thick fiberglass duct board panel measuring 48 by 120 inches, supplied boxed for fabricating rectangular duct and plenums.

The 1-1/2 inch thickness provides greater thermal resistance than 1 inch board, which is what most energy codes require for duct located in unconditioned space. Attics and vented crawl spaces are the typical case: duct in an attic that reaches well above outdoor temperature in summer and drops toward it in winter loses or gains a substantial fraction of the energy it carries, and the code requirement for insulation reflects the size of that loss.

The additional thickness also improves acoustic performance. Duct board is inherently absorptive because the airstream side is fiberglass rather than metal, and thicker board absorbs more low frequency energy. In systems where blower noise or air rush at the plenum is a concern, that difference is audible.

Boxed packaging protects the panel edges and the foil facing in transit and storage, which matters because a damaged facing must be repaired before the section is installed and a crushed edge makes a poor closure.

Fabrication uses grooving tools to cut the folds, with closures stapled and sealed at every seam. Sealing quality determines whether the duct performs, since an unsealed duct board joint leaks freely.

Applications include residential and light commercial supply and return duct and plenum fabrication.
