The Nidec/Emerson HD5P2E is a 5 horsepower three-phase motor rated for 208-230 and 460 volt operation, supplied for fan, pump, and general drive applications in commercial and industrial equipment.

Integral horsepower three-phase motors of this class serve equipment well beyond the fractional motors used in residential HVAC: large air handler blowers, cooling tower fans, pumps, compressors, and industrial process drives.

Three-phase construction removes the start winding, run capacitor, and starting switch that single-phase motors require, which eliminates the components responsible for most single-phase motor failures. What remains as the practical failure mode is bearing wear and, in demanding applications, thermal damage from overload or from a lost phase.

Single phasing, where one of the three supply phases is lost while the motor runs, is a specific hazard. The motor continues to turn but draws heavily on the remaining phases and overheats rapidly, so proper overload protection is essential rather than optional.

The dual voltage winding is configured at the terminal box according to the nameplate diagram, and the configuration must be confirmed before energising.
