Nidec/Emerson Motor 1/12-1/20 HP 1150 RPM 9664

The Nidec/Emerson 9664 is a multi-horsepower motor covering 1/12 to 1/20 horsepower at 1150 RPM for small fan applications in refrigeration and light HVAC equipment.

Motors in this fractional range serve the smallest fan duties in the trade: evaporator fans in refrigerated cases, small condenser fans, and circulation fans in cabinets and cases.

Because the loads are so light, these motors are frequently shaded pole designs rather than permanent split capacitor. A shaded pole motor uses a copper ring around part of each pole to produce the phase shift needed for starting, which makes it simple, cheap, and free of any capacitor, at the cost of low efficiency. That trade-off is acceptable at a few watts of output and unacceptable at larger sizes, which is why the design disappears above the fractional range.

Where an application permits, replacing a shaded pole fan motor with an electronically commutated equivalent produces a substantial efficiency improvement, which in refrigeration also reduces the heat added inside the cabinet.
