Nidec/Emerson Electric Motor 1/3 HP Multi-Speed 1075 RPM

The Nidec/Emerson EL3458 is an economy-line multi-speed motor rated 1/3 horsepower at 1075 RPM for fan and blower applications in HVAC equipment.

Multi-speed windings provide discrete airflow settings selected by connecting the appropriate speed lead. In an indoor blower the arrangement allows heating and cooling airflow to be set independently; in a fan coil or ventilation application it allows the installed airflow to be trimmed to the actual system resistance at commissioning.

The practical requirement is that unused speed leads be individually insulated and secured. A bare unused lead in a blower compartment is a short circuit waiting to happen, and one drawn into a rotating wheel will fault to the cabinet and can damage the equipment control board.

Recording which speed lead was connected before removing the failed motor is the reliable way to reproduce the original airflow, since OEM tap assignments are seldom documented at the equipment.

The motor requires a permanently connected run capacitor of the specified value.
