The Nidec/Emerson EL3588 is an economy-line three-speed motor rated 1/2 horsepower at 1075 RPM on a 230 volt supply, for indoor blower applications in furnaces, air handlers, and fan coil units.

Three-speed direct drive blower motors are the standard arrangement in residential air handling, and setting the taps correctly is a commissioning task with real consequences.

In heating, airflow determines the temperature rise across the heat exchanger. Too little airflow drives the rise above the range stamped on the data plate, which overheats the exchanger and shortens its life. In cooling, airflow determines evaporator saturation temperature. Too little pushes the coil toward freezing and reduces capacity; too much reduces dehumidification and can carry condensate off the coil into the supply duct.

Both are verified by measurement rather than by assuming the tap is correct, and both take only minutes with instruments already in the van.

The motor requires a permanently connected run capacitor of the specified value.
