Description
The Nidec/Emerson HD7P2E is a 7.5 horsepower, 1800 RPM three-phase motor rated for 230 and 460 volt operation, for commercial and industrial drive applications.
The 1800 RPM nominal rating identifies a four-pole motor on a 60 hertz supply. Actual full-load speed is slightly below the synchronous figure because an induction motor must slip relative to the rotating field in order to develop torque, which is why nameplates typically show a figure a little under 1800.
Service factor is a specification worth noting on motors of this size. A service factor above unity indicates the motor can deliver more than its nameplate horsepower continuously under defined conditions, providing margin for load variation. Operating continuously in the service factor range does, however, run the motor hotter and reduces insulation life, so it is margin rather than an extension of the rating.
Enclosure type matters equally: an open drip-proof motor and a totally enclosed fan-cooled motor of the same rating suit very different environments.
