The Lau 60765804 is a fan blade hub with a 1/2 inch bore, supplied for mounting propeller fan blades to motor shafts of that diameter.
Half inch shafts appear on larger fractional and small integral horsepower motors, typically driving the bigger condenser and ventilation fans found in commercial equipment.
As blade size and mass increase, the security of the hub connection becomes more important rather than less. A large blade running with a hub that has loosened imposes substantial cyclic load on the motor bearings, and the failure progresses quickly: the bore wears, the blade develops a wobble, the bearings are damaged, and in the worst case the assembly leaves the shaft while running.
Signs to look for during service include a blade that can be rocked on the shaft by hand, visible fretting or bright wear at the bore, and a set screw that turns without resistance.
Where a hub has been running loose, the motor shaft should be examined for scoring before a new hub is fitted, since a damaged shaft seat will not hold the replacement either.
