CPS 5-2-1 Hardstart CSR-U3

The CPS CSR-U3 is a 5-2-1 hard start kit for single phase hermetic compressors, covering the upper capacity range within the series.

Larger single phase compressors are the ones most likely to benefit from starting assistance, simply because locked rotor current rises with capacity while the available supply does not. A large single phase condensing unit at the end of a long service drop can see meaningful voltage sag at the moment of starting, and that sag reduces the torque the motor can produce at precisely the moment it needs the most.

This is why starting complaints cluster in particular installations. Rural properties on long service runs, buildings where the unit sits far from the panel, and premises where supply voltage sits at the low end of the acceptable band all see starting difficulty earlier in a compressor's life than a well supplied installation would.

Measuring voltage at the compressor terminals during a start attempt, rather than at the panel, shows what the motor is actually receiving. A significant drop points to conductor sizing, connection quality, or supply capacity, and those are worth correcting where practical.

Confirm compressor capacity and locked rotor amperage against the kit rating before installation, mount the kit securely where it will not be subject to vibration, and verify starting performance after fitting.
