CPS 5-2-1 Hardstart CSR-U1

The CPS CSR-U1 is a 5-2-1 hard start kit, sometimes referred to as a compressor saver, designed to assist single phase hermetic compressors during starting. The U1 designation covers the smaller capacity range within the series.

A single phase compressor draws locked rotor current for the brief period between energising and the rotor coming up to speed. Where line voltage is marginal, where the compressor has aged, or where the run capacitor alone provides insufficient starting torque, the motor can struggle to break away. The symptoms are a momentary hum before starting, lights dimming across the property when the unit cycles, or the compressor tripping its overload on start attempts.

A hard start kit adds a start capacitor to the circuit through a relay. The additional capacitance produces greater starting torque, bringing the rotor up to speed faster and reducing the time spent drawing locked rotor current. The relay then removes the start capacitor once the motor is running, since it is not rated for continuous duty.

Kits of this type are sized by compressor capacity, and fitting one outside its intended range provides either insufficient assistance or excessive capacitance. Confirm the compressor tonnage and locked rotor amperage against the kit rating before installing.

A hard start kit assists a healthy compressor. It does not repair a failing one, and repeated starting difficulty warrants investigation of supply voltage, run capacitor condition, and system pressures.
