CPS 5-2-1 Hardstart CSR-U2

The CPS CSR-U2 is a 5-2-1 hard start kit for single phase hermetic compressors, covering the mid capacity range within the series.

Correct sizing separates a hard start kit that helps from one that causes harm. The start capacitor supplies additional torque for a fraction of a second, and the capacitance value required is proportional to the motor it is assisting. Too little capacitance and the kit makes no measurable difference to starting. Too much and the motor is subjected to excessive starting torque, which stresses the crankshaft, the valve plate, and the internal mountings, and increases the electrical stress on the windings.

Selection is made against compressor capacity and confirmed against locked rotor amperage from the compressor nameplate. Where the nameplate is unreadable, the equipment data plate or the manufacturer's parts listing provides the figure.

It is also worth confirming that a hard start kit is the correct remedy before fitting one. A compressor that has recently begun starting poorly usually has an underlying cause, most often a degraded run capacitor, low supply voltage under load, a failing contactor with pitted contacts, or system pressures that have not equalised because a metering device or check valve is holding a differential.

Fitting a hard start kit to mask any of these leaves the original fault in place. Diagnose first, then assist starting where the compressor genuinely needs it.
