The Century A.O. Smith 747A is a double shaft motor rated 1/8 to 1/4 horsepower at 1625 RPM, supplied for evaporative cooler and dual-drive fan applications.

A double shaft motor extends a shaft from both ends of the frame, allowing one motor to drive two loads. In evaporative cooling this is the standard arrangement: one shaft carries the blower drive pulley while the other drives the water pump or a second component, so a single motor performs both functions without additional drives.

The design is also used in some unit heater, agricultural ventilation, and specialised fan applications where two driven elements sit on a common axis.

Because both shaft ends are working surfaces, both must be verified when selecting a replacement. Shaft diameter and length may differ between the two ends, and the overall length of the assembly matters in equipment where the motor sits in a confined housing.

The multi-horsepower rating allows the motor to cover several OEM ratings by tap selection.
