The Yellow Jacket 61158 is a six piece fin comb set for straightening bent coil fins across a range of fin spacings.

Fin density varies between equipment manufacturers and between models, and it is measured in fins per inch. A coil might have anywhere from around eight to eighteen fins per inch, and a comb has to match.

Using a comb with wider spacing than the coil skips fins and does not straighten them properly. Using one with narrower spacing forces teeth against fins that are not aligned with them, bending and tearing them further.

A set covering the common spacings means the correct comb is available for whatever coil is encountered, which is why sets rather than individual combs are the normal purchase.

Identifying the spacing is done by measuring across a clean section of coil and counting, or simply by trying combs on an undamaged area until one slides through freely.

Fin straightening should follow cleaning rather than precede it. Combing a dirty coil drags debris through the fins and can pack it deeper, and the improvement in airflow from straightening is largely lost if the coil remains fouled.

Badly corroded coils may not be recoverable, since fins that have lost material break rather than bend back.
