DiversiTech Fin Comb Kit T-100

The DiversiTech T-100 is a fin comb kit used to straighten bent fins on condenser and evaporator coils.

Coil fins are thin aluminium sheets pressed onto the tubing to increase heat transfer surface, and they are easily flattened. Hail, contact with tools or equipment, pressure washing at close range, and general handling all bend them over.

Flattened fins block airflow through the affected area. Air takes the path of least resistance and diverts around the damaged section, so that part of the coil contributes little to heat transfer even though its tubing is intact and full of refrigerant.

On a condenser this raises head pressure, increases compressor work, reduces capacity, and shortens equipment life. On an evaporator it reduces airflow and can produce localised freezing.

A fin comb has teeth spaced to match a particular fin density, and drawing it through the damaged area lifts the fins back to vertical. Kits include several combs to cover the range of fin spacings found across manufacturers.

Using the wrong tooth spacing damages fins rather than repairing them, so matching the comb to the coil is the first step.

The work is done gently and in the direction of the fins, and heavily corroded fins may break rather than straighten.

Confirm the kit covers the fin spacings encountered, and comb after cleaning rather than before.
