Worthington Recovery Cylinder 30# Refrigeration Recover Tank

The Worthington 285311P is a 30 pound refrigerant recovery cylinder used to contain recovered refrigerant during service and decommissioning.

Recovery cylinders and disposable refrigerant cylinders are different products and must never be confused. A disposable cylinder is built for a single filling by the manufacturer and is not rated, certified, or legal for refilling. A recovery cylinder is a refillable pressure vessel built to DOT specification, fitted with dual service valves for liquid and vapour access and a pressure relief device, and subject to periodic requalification.

Refilling a disposable cylinder is both illegal in the United States and genuinely dangerous, and it has caused fatal accidents.

The fill limit is the requirement most often breached. A recovery cylinder must not be filled beyond eighty percent of its capacity by weight at 21 degrees Celsius. The remaining volume allows the liquid to expand as temperature rises, and a cylinder filled liquid full has no space for that expansion. Hydraulic pressure then rises extremely rapidly with temperature, and it can exceed the cylinder's burst pressure.

This is why recovery machines with automatic shutoff and a scale under the cylinder are standard practice rather than optional refinements.

The nominal 30 pound designation refers to water capacity, not to the weight of refrigerant it may hold, which varies with the refrigerant's density.

Confirm the cylinder is within its requalification date, and label contents accurately.
