Ducting a dehumidifier substantially changes what it can do. A free standing unit dehumidifies the air immediately around it, which is adequate for a single open space. Ducting the supply and return allows the unit to draw from and discharge to specific locations, so a dehumidifier installed in a mechanical room or crawl space can treat a distant or partitioned area, or be integrated with the air handler to distribute dry air throughout a home.
