Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 1820-009 is a PG9 pilot generator with a right hand orientation, producing millivolt output from a standing pilot flame.
A pilot generator, or thermopile, is an assembly of many thermocouple junctions in series. Where a single thermocouple produces roughly 25 to 30 millivolts, sufficient only to hold a magnetic safety valve, a thermopile produces several hundred millivolts, enough to operate a gas valve directly through a millivolt thermostat.
This is what makes a fully self powered gas appliance possible, requiring no electrical supply at all.
The left and right hand designation refers to the orientation of the generator relative to the pilot assembly and the direction its lead exits. Selecting the correct orientation matters because the generator must sit in the pilot flame in the intended position while its lead routes to the valve without strain or interference with the burner.
Testing a pilot generator requires two measurements. Open circuit output, measured with the leads disconnected, indicates the generator's basic condition. Output under load, measured with the valve connected and calling, is the figure that determines whether the system will work, since a deteriorating generator can show acceptable open circuit voltage and collapse under load.
Applications include millivolt unit heaters, wall heaters, fireplaces, and pool heaters.
