Robertshaw Pilot Generator PG9 Left 1820-019

The Robertshaw 1820-019 is a PG9 pilot generator with a left hand orientation, for millivolt gas control systems.

The orientation designation exists because the pilot generator must be positioned correctly within the pilot flame, and appliances differ in which side the generator approaches from and where its lead must route.

Fitting the wrong hand generally means the generator either cannot be positioned properly in the flame, or its lead must be routed awkwardly across the burner compartment where heat and mechanical interference will eventually damage it. Neither is acceptable, and the correct orientation should be confirmed against the existing generator before ordering.

Position within the flame is what determines output. The generator's tip must be enveloped by the pilot flame; too far out and it does not reach full temperature, producing low output and an unreliable system. Too deep, and the flame may not properly surround the element.

Pilot generators deteriorate gradually rather than failing outright. Output falls over years of continuous operation, and the system becomes progressively less reliable, dropping out under conditions it previously tolerated. Measuring output under load against the manufacturer's minimum identifies a generator approaching the end of its life.

Applications include millivolt unit heaters, wall heaters, fireplaces, pool heaters, and self powered gas appliances.
