Robertshaw Flame Sensor 10-681

The Robertshaw 10-681 is a flame sensor for gas fired heating equipment, proving flame presence to the ignition control.

The flame sensor is a safety device. Its function is to confirm that ignition has actually occurred, so that the control can close the gas valve if it has not. Without that proof, a failed ignition would allow gas to continue flowing into the heat exchanger and the building.

Because it is a safety function, the failure mode is deliberately restrictive: any doubt results in lockout. A furnace that lights and then shuts down after a few seconds, repeating several times before locking out, is the classic signature of a flame sensing problem. The burner is lighting correctly, but the control is not receiving adequate proof.

The usual cause is a contaminated sensor rod. Combustion deposits build an oxide film that insulates the rod and reduces the microamp signal below the control's threshold. Cleaning the rod with fine abrasive material restores it, and this is a routine maintenance item rather than a repair.

Where cleaning does not restore the signal, the ground path through the burner assembly, the sensor wire and its connection, and the sensor's position in the flame are the next things to check.

Applications include residential and light commercial gas furnaces and heating appliances.
