Packard Cloth Sand Screen A52010

The Packard A52010 is an abrasive sand cloth roll used for cleaning and preparing copper tubing and fittings.

Abrasive selection for copper preparation is straightforward, but a few points are worth knowing.

The abrasive must be aggressive enough to remove oxide and reach bright metal, and fine enough not to remove significant material or leave deep scoring. Copper is soft, and an excessively coarse abrasive will thin the tube wall over the cleaned area and leave a rough surface.

Contamination is the consideration that catches people out. Abrasive cloth used on other metals carries particles of those metals, and steel particles left on a copper surface can cause corrosion at the joint. Cloth used on copper should be kept for copper.

Emery cloth is sometimes used but is not ideal, since the abrasive can leave residues that interfere with wetting. Purpose made copper cleaning abrasive avoids this.

Wire brushes serve the same purpose for fitting sockets, where cloth is awkward to use, and a combined tube and fitting brush covers both surfaces.

Whatever is used, the objective is the same: bright, clean, dry copper on both mating surfaces, prepared immediately before assembly and not touched afterward.

Confirm the roll width suits the tube sizes handled. Store abrasive where it will stay dry and free of contamination, and replace it as the abrasive wears.
