DiversiTech Sanding Screen Abrasive Cloth 1-1/2" X 25YDS

The DiversiTech SC-25 is a 25 yard roll of 1-1/2 inch wide abrasive sanding screen cloth, used to clean and prepare copper tube and fittings before brazing or soldering.

Abrasive cloth is the standard method of preparing copper for a soldered or brazed joint, and the preparation determines whether the joint succeeds.

Copper oxidises in air. The thin oxide layer that forms on stored tube and fittings is invisible in ordinary light but prevents filler metal wetting the surface, and a joint made on unprepared copper will not draw filler into the socket by capillary action. The result is a joint that looks finished from outside while the filler has penetrated only the first fraction of the socket.

Such joints frequently survive a pressure test and fail later under vibration and thermal cycling, which is the worst possible time.

Screen type abrasive cloth has an open mesh that clears itself rather than clogging with the copper it removes, so it stays effective for longer than solid backed abrasive.

Preparation should be done immediately before assembly, since freshly cleaned copper begins oxidising again straight away. Both surfaces need cleaning, the tube outside and the fitting socket inside, and cleaned surfaces should not be handled, as skin oils interfere with wetting.
