Owens Corning Duct Insulation T75 3X48X50 Wrap

The Owens Corning 670733 is a fiberglass duct wrap insulation roll, 3 inches thick by 48 inches wide by 50 feet long, with a foil facing, for external insulation of sheet metal duct.

Duct wrap is the standard method of insulating metal duct after fabrication. The blanket is wrapped around the duct exterior, the facing is lapped and sealed, and the assembly provides both thermal resistance and a vapour retarder.

The vapour retarder function is not secondary. Duct carrying cooling supply air runs below the dew point of the surrounding air, and where that duct passes through an unconditioned attic or crawl space in a humid climate, water vapour will migrate through the insulation and condense on the cold metal surface unless the facing prevents it. The result is wet insulation, corroded duct, dripping onto ceilings, and eventually mould. That is why the facing must be continuous and every lap and seam sealed, and why insulating duct with unfaced material is not an acceptable substitute.

At 3 inches, this thickness provides substantial thermal resistance for duct in unconditioned space in demanding climates.

Compression is the common installation error. The stated R-value assumes the blanket at full thickness, and wrap pulled tight around a duct or compressed by strapping delivers considerably less than its rating.

Applications include residential and light commercial sheet metal duct in attics, crawl spaces, garages, and unconditioned mechanical spaces.
