Nidec/Emerson Ultimate Puller UP-1

The Nidec/Emerson UP-1 Ultimate Puller is a tool for removing blower wheels, pulleys, and fan components from motor shafts.

Components mounted on motor shafts frequently resist removal. A blower wheel or pulley that has been in place for years is held by corrosion between the hub and the shaft, and the setscrew has often bitten into the shaft leaving a raised burr that has to pass through the hub bore.

The temptation is to lever the component off or strike it, and both cause damage. Levering distorts a blower wheel, which unbalances it permanently. Striking the shaft end damages the motor bearings, since the force passes straight through them, and a motor that survives the removal may fail shortly afterward from the bearing damage inflicted during it.

A puller applies force along the shaft axis in a controlled way, drawing the component off without shock loading and without levering against the wheel.

The preparatory steps matter as much as the tool. Loosen and fully back out the setscrew, and dress the burr it has raised on the shaft with a file or stone, since that burr will otherwise prevent removal regardless of the force applied. Penetrating oil applied and given time to work helps considerably on corroded assemblies.

Confirm the puller suits the component and shaft sizes, and apply force gradually rather than in sudden increments.
