Mueller 2 PVC DWV Comb 5858

The Mueller 5858 is a two inch PVC DWV combination fitting used in drain, waste, and vent piping and in condensate drainage systems.

DWV fittings differ from pressure fittings in a way that matters when selecting them. Drain, waste, and vent systems operate at atmospheric pressure and rely on gravity, so the fittings are designed around flow characteristics rather than pressure containment. Their internal geometry is shaped to guide flow smoothly in the direction of drainage and to avoid creating obstructions where solids could lodge.

Pressure rated PVC fittings, by contrast, are designed to contain internal pressure and have sharper internal transitions. They are not interchangeable with DWV fittings, and substituting one for the other is a recognisable error at inspection.

For HVAC work, DWV pipe and fittings are commonly used for condensate drainage, where the two inch size suits larger equipment and situations where a generous drain reduces the likelihood of blockage.

The same installation principles apply as to any condensate drain. Continuous fall toward the discharge point, adequate support so the run does not sag, a properly formed trap where the connection is to a negative pressure section, and a cleanout to permit clearing.

Confirm the fitting size, configuration, and material standard against the application. Cut square, deburr, and follow the solvent cement manufacturer's procedure and cure times.
