Master Lock MLS5KALF-A445

The Master Lock MLS5KALF-A445 is a padlock.

Note before anything else: the source data carries no description for this item at all — the field is blank. What follows is read from the part number, and every element of it needs verifying against Master Lock's specification before this is published.

The part number structure indicates a Master Lock No. 5, which is their 2 inch wide laminated steel body padlock and one of the most widely used padlocks made. KA indicates keyed alike. A445 is a key charting number.

The key number is the important part and it is worth explaining, because it catches people out. Keyed alike means every lock in the batch opens with one key — but only within that key number. Ordering keyed alike without specifying A445 produces locks that match each other and not the A445 locks already on site, which is how a facility ends up with two keyrings and a puzzle. Order the number, and record it somewhere other than on the key.

Keyed alike suits a fleet or a site where one person opens many locks. The cost is that one compromised key opens all of them.

Obtain the full specification — shackle diameter, clearance, and cylinder — before listing. Shackle clearance in particular determines whether a lock physically fits.
