The Mars M33833 is an electric heat sequencer, supplied as a replacement for the White-Rodgers 24A34-6.

A sequencer stages electric heating elements on and off in sequence rather than switching them simultaneously. It operates thermally: a heating element within the sequencer warms a bimetal, which closes contacts after a delay, and cools to reopen them after the call ends.

The staging serves two purposes. It limits the inrush when heat is energised, since bringing several kilowatts of resistance heat on at once produces a substantial step in demand and a visible lighting flicker in the building. And it allows the blower to be started before the heating elements energise, which prevents the elements heating in still air.

That second function is a safety matter. Electric heating elements energised without airflow overheat rapidly, opening the limits and, over repeated occurrences, damaging the elements and the surrounding assembly.

The delay is inherent in the thermal design and is not adjustable. A sequencer that has become slow, or that no longer closes at all, produces heat that does not come on or comes on erratically.

Applications include electric furnaces, air handlers with electric heat, and heat pump supplemental heat.
