The Mainstream Engineering QT2910 is a compressor terminal repair kit used to restore damaged or burned terminal connections on hermetic compressors.
Compressor terminals fail through a well understood sequence. The terminal carries the full running current of the compressor motor through a glass to metal seal in the compressor shell. A connection that is loose, corroded, or fitted with a degraded terminal has resistance, resistance under current generates heat, and heat accelerates the degradation that caused it.
The visible evidence is discolouration on the terminal or the lead, then charring of the insulation, then in advanced cases a burned terminal pin. Loose or damaged terminal connections are among the more common findings when a compressor fails to start on an otherwise healthy system.
A terminal repair kit provides replacement connectors and insulation to rebuild the connection properly, restoring a compressor that is mechanically and electrically sound but has a failed connection at the shell.
Safety deserves emphasis here. Compressor terminals are under refrigerant pressure, and a terminal that has been damaged by overheating can fail under that pressure. Terminal venting incidents have caused serious injury. Power must be disconnected and locked out, the technician should not stand directly in front of the terminal box while working, and any compressor showing signs of terminal damage should be treated with caution.
