Gardner Bender GBEGVD-3504 Non-Contact Voltage Detector

The Gardner Bender GBEGVD-3504 is a non-contact voltage detector.

The value of non-contact detection is in the name: the tool identifies the presence of AC voltage without touching a conductor. The detector senses the electric field a live conductor radiates, so it can be held against insulation, a cable jacket, an outlet face, or a switch and indicate whether the circuit behind it is live.

That capability is what makes it the first tool out of the bag on any electrical work. Before anything is opened, before a conductor is touched, the detector confirms whether the circuit is dead — which is the difference between a routine job and a serious injury.

The limitation is as important as the capability and deserves to be understood. A non-contact detector confirms voltage is present. It does not reliably confirm voltage is absent. Shielded cable, conduit, deeply buried conductors, or a low battery can all produce no indication on a live circuit. This is why safe practice never relies on a non-contact detector alone to prove a circuit dead: the detector is a first check, and a contact meter with a proven live-dead-live test is what actually establishes it.

Test the detector on a known live source before and after use.
