Product Highlights
Description
The Gardner Bender GBEGFI-3501 is an outlet and GFI tester.
This is a diagnostic tool that answers a question a multimeter answers slowly and a visual inspection does not answer at all: is this receptacle wired correctly? Plugged into an outlet, a tester of this type indicates the wiring condition through an indicator pattern, identifying the common faults — an open ground, an open neutral, an open hot, or reversed conductors.
Those faults matter for a reason worth stating plainly. A receptacle with a reversed hot and neutral, or with no ground connection at all, powers a device perfectly normally. Everything plugged into it works. The fault is completely invisible in operation and only reveals itself when something goes wrong — at which point the protection that should have been there is not. An open ground in particular means every metal-cased tool plugged into that outlet has no fault path.
The GFI function tests the ground fault protection itself. A GFCI device that has failed still passes power; it simply no longer trips. Testing it is the only way to know it works, and manufacturers specify periodic testing for exactly this reason.
Applications include electrical installation and inspection, facilities maintenance, property management, home inspection, and construction.
Users include electricians, maintenance technicians, inspectors, and facilities departments.
