Fasco Shaded Pole Motor Rectangular Outlet Shaped

The Fasco A269 is a shaded pole draft inducer motor with a rectangular outlet blower housing, used in gas fired furnaces and heating appliances.

Shaded pole motors are the traditional choice for draft inducers and small blowers. The design has no start winding, no capacitor, and no centrifugal switch, deriving its starting torque instead from copper shading rings set into the stator poles. Simplicity is its principal virtue. There are very few components to fail, and the motor tolerates frequent starting and the elevated temperatures found near a heat exchanger.

The trade off is efficiency. A shaded pole motor converts a modest fraction of the electrical energy it consumes into shaft power, with the remainder appearing as heat. In an inducer running only during heating calls this is an acceptable compromise, which is why the design persisted in this application long after more efficient motors displaced it elsewhere. Newer high efficiency appliances increasingly use ECM inducers for precisely this reason.

Outlet configuration is not interchangeable. A rectangular outlet housing mates to a specific appliance transition, and a round outlet motor of otherwise identical rating will not fit.

Confirm voltage, wheel diameter and rotation, outlet shape and orientation, mounting pattern, and electrical connections against the appliance. Clean the blower wheel and inspect the vent system when replacing an inducer, since restriction shortens the life of the replacement.
