Fasco Motor Unit Bearing 1 UB562

The Fasco UB562 is a unit bearing replacement for shaded pole and small fractional horsepower motors, supplied as a service part for motor rebuilding and repair.

Unit bearing motors use a sleeve bearing assembly integrated into the motor end shield rather than separate ball bearings at each end. The design is compact, quiet, and inexpensive, which makes it the standard arrangement in refrigeration evaporator fan motors, small condenser fans, and similar low load applications.

Sleeve bearings depend on a film of oil between shaft and bearing surface. That film is maintained by an oil reservoir, usually a wick or felt packing, and the motor operates reliably for as long as the reservoir holds lubricant and stays clean. Failure follows the loss of that film. The bearing surface wears, clearance increases, the shaft begins to run off centre, and the rotor eventually contacts the stator.

The audible warning is a rising whine or a rhythmic scraping that changes with speed. Checking shaft play by hand, feeling for radial movement at the shaft end, identifies a worn bearing before it seizes.

Whether replacing the bearing or the complete motor is the better course depends on the motor's value and condition. Confirm the bearing dimensions and the motor model against the application before ordering, and inspect the shaft for scoring, since a scored shaft will destroy a new bearing quickly.
